After the new world record in points in the last season (980, 15 points) and the outstanding performances in the first three competitions expectances were high. The goal was of course another victory in total to make the season in Europe of the F0711-11 the most successful in Rennteam history.

With this ambition the team started the competition. As the first car the F0711-11 entered Scruiteneering and finished it as the first car, too. Besides, the two guys achieved a considerably convincing 5th place in the Business Plan with little point loss. Right the next day the Cost Event followed, in which the team secured the best result of the season with the 3rd place. In Engineering Design the team presented itself powerfully and achieved the Design Finals for the third time in a row. In conclusion the F0711-11 was only defeated by Ka-Racing and TuFast.

After the Statics the team started into the dynamics with a little point gap. The motivation was consequently even higher to transform the deficit into a lead. On Saturday morning the dynamics started as usual with Skid Pad and Acceleration – at the same time. Completing all runs in a relatively short time period is of course always difficult. The reason for it is that all teams want to drive as late as possible for due to warmer track temperatures at midday and rubber left on the track there is clearly more grip. Thus it happens that several teams cannot complete all runs in the short time period.

Rennteam pursued a quite common plan in Spain, too: one Acceleration run, after that both Skid Pad runs and in the end another Acceleration run. Unfortunately in the end only one Acceleration run was realised. Accordingly the first run on the relatively cold track sufficed for the 14th place in Acceleration. In Skid Pad the car performed quite well and the drivers got a solid 4th place for the team, although with a relatively big time interval difference to the top team. The point gap consequently grew further in the first dynamic disciplines.

In the morning the team set off for Autocross. The track was considerably modified compared to the previous year in Spain. Yet the drivers and the f0711-11 performed that well here that they were not defeated by anyone. 1st place with a relatively big distance to the other teams.

So before the showdown on Sunday everything was still possible and the 425 points out of Endurance and Efficiency were as always crucial.
26 laps had to be completed here at the Circuit de Catalunya, so the track was rather short. The track was that good for the drivers that they achieved the fastest time in the competition here and the 1st place! In the Efficiency there was a small mistake for it was not taken into consideration that the F0711-11 runs with E85, therefore the placing will be handed later. Overall the team achieved the 1st place thanks to the performance in Autocross and Endurance. So it is certain that the F0711-11 is the most successful vehicle in Rennteam history so far with three victories and a second place!

FS Germany 2016 https://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fs-germany-2016/?lang=en https://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fs-germany-2016/?lang=en#respond Mon, 15 Aug 2016 12:15:30 +0000 http://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/?p=2815&lang=en Rennteam always came in 2nd in the overall ranking in the last three editions of Formula Student Germany. Now the F0711-11 travelled to the Hockenheimring with four overall victories behind it, two still of the previous season in Spain and Michigan, to secure the crown at the home race in Hockenheim, too. From 9th to 14th August the competition was held there for the 10th time. The team and the vehicle were ready to compete with all the others at the perhaps most competitive Formula Student competition. Correspondingly the competition began: With a good result in the so-called Scruiteneering Quiz that determines when one is allowed to the technical acceptance, the team could see through the Scruiteneering rather quickly and problem-free on Wednesday, 10th August. On Thursday the Statics took place for the almost 40 participating electric teams, which gave the team some time on the Practice Area. The goal was of course the preparation for the upcoming dynamic disciplines on the weekend.

Then came the first big dampers. Because of an incorrectly uploaded document for the Cost Analysis, the team was deducted 40 points and thus received the maximum penalty designated in the regulations. What is more, however, another 10 points followed because the video fort the “Vehicle Status Report“ was also submitted too late. This is a video that has to be submitted three weeks before the competition and that proves that the car is ready to drive. With o total of 50 penalty points Rennteam had to work flat out even more to be competitive.

On Friday was the first very close-packed day at the Formula Student Germany: Already very early in the morning the team had to master Engineering Design and the Cost Analysis. In the Cost Analysis we came in 66th place because the 40 points were offset here. In the Engineering Design the team could reach the finals as in Austria, too. In the afternoon Skid Pad took place that is traditionally artificially irrigated in Hockenheim. Here the car could not quite keep up with the competition and came in 11th place. Later the Business Presentation followed at which the guys could convince, too, and entered the finals together with three other teams. The finals took place directly afterwards during which the participants presented their concepts in front of the camera and hundreds of interested team members. Rennteam achieved the 3rd place!

On Saturday the team started with mixed feelings. On the one hand two finals had been reached, on the other hand there was not such a good performance in Skid Pad and there were 50 penalty points. In the Acceleration Event a good 7th place was achieved against powerful competition with which we could catch up a few points in the overall ranking against the competition. In the following Autocross things remained exciting up till to the end. Only shortly before the end GFR could beat Rennteam’s best time and relegate the team to second place. Following Autocross the Design finals took place, in which Rennteam stood up to five other teams this time and secured the 1st place! At the end of the day the confidence was already bigger to play at the top in spite of the penalty after all. For the experience from the last competitions has shown: the possible 425 points on the last day are a ripsnorter!

And that is how it was on Sunday. With very fast lap times the two drivers of the F0711-11 were only defeated by TU Munich in Endurance. 2nd place here! In the Efficiency rating a very good 6th place could again be achieved. The exciting thing about Formula Student Germany is that some results remain secret until the end and are only announced at the Award Ceremony. So it remained thrilling until the very last second as to who would stand on the podium. With 838,8 points in total Rennteam was only defeated by TU Munich in the end. We congratulate them on this outstanding performance and are looking forward to competing against them again in Spain!

FS Austria 2016 https://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fs-austria-2016/?lang=en https://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fs-austria-2016/?lang=en#respond Thu, 04 Aug 2016 12:02:28 +0000 http://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fs-austria-2016/?lang=en After the F0711-11 and its team had started successfully into the season with a victory at the Formula Student UK in Silverstone, the team did not have much time left to prepare for the next competition. The few test days were spent ensuring the car’s reliability in the competition. On the 31st July a slightly longer bus drive lead the team to the Red Bull arena in Spielberg, where the Formula Student Austria took place. The competition in Austria is the smallest in which Rennteam participates, at least regarding the number of the participating teams. Yet that makes it so special. This year 21 combustion cars and as many electric cars started in the competition. So there were enough top teams with very fast cars and again and again strong appearances in the static disciplines.

Due to the low number of participants the schedule in the FS Austria is a bit tighter. The day after the arrival the technical acceptance was awaiting the team directly after the setting up of the pit. For reasons of time we only finished the Tilt Table, the Brake Test and the Noise Test the day after. Before the car passed these tests, though, the Design Event and the Cost Event already took place. In Design Rennteam qualified for the finals that took place at a later point in time, together with TU Munich and Joanneum Graz. In the Cost Event the two guys could bring home a good ninth place. In the afternoon the Business Presentation took place, too, in which a very good 6th place was in it for us with only little point loss due to the business idea. A little bit of time remained to prepare the now competitive vehicle for the dynamic disciplines on the Practice Area that took place right the next morning.

As usual Skid Pad and Acceleration were on schedule at the same time. Time management is particularly important here for the available time is easily underestimated due to the few participating teams. In Skid Pad everything went well and the F0711-11 set the fastest time! 1st place! In Acceleration the vehicle struggled a bit with Launch Control. Nevertheless a solid 6th place was achieved. The distance to the 1st place: about twelve hundredths. There was no time to relax, though, because the Design finals took place directly afterwards. Here the team could probably not convince the judges of the vehicle concept as well as the other finalists in those 60 minutes and we came in 3rd place. In the afternoon the competition continued with an exciting Autocross session. The racetrack was completely modified compared to the year before and was really challenging. The drivers achieved very good times and were only defeated by GFR and TU Munich, so they achieved the 3rd place!

On the last day there was the supreme discipline: the Endurance.  And with it of course the Fuel Efficiency.  Altogether 425 out of 1000 points are awarded on that day. With very fast lap times and even the fastest time in the competition the two drivers secured the victory in Endurance with the F0711-11 and a strong 6th place in Fuel Efficiency. Rennteam won the overall ranking of Formula Student Austria with 933,4 points in total! A very strong performance considering the competitors that came!

FS United Kingdom 2016 https://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fs-united-kingdom-2016/?lang=en https://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fs-united-kingdom-2016/?lang=en#respond Mon, 18 Jul 2016 12:22:02 +0000 http://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/?p=2819&lang=en On the 11th of July the time had come! For the F0711-11 and the team the journey to the first real competition of season 2016 began. After a strenuous car journey from Stuttgart to Silverstone and the set up on the camp site the team even had the possibility to watch Formula 1 testing for one morning the day after. In the afternoon the participants were allowed arrange themselves in the respective  box and start to prepare the car for the Statics and technical inspection.

Things got really serious on Thursday when a little Statics marathon awaited the team. Engineering Design, Cost Report and Business Presentation followed in immediate sequence. With the strong competition that consists of all combustion and electric cars in England, Rennteam just barely missed the spot in the finals of Engineering Design and achieved 7th place. In the Cost Report we achieved 34th place and in the Business Presentation 53rd place. The high power density among the teams showed us in the last two disciplines that we have to step on it here to play at the top in the further competitions again!

Fortunately we succeeded in the entire Scrutineering including Tilt Table, Brake Test and Noise Test already during Thursday so that we had the entire Friday to prepare ourselves and the car on the Practice Area for the dynamic disciplines. This was especially important for this year where more teams than ever before passed Scruiteneering and were thus allowed to participate in the dynamic disciplines.

On Saturday the competition continued with a very tight timetable: From 9-12 the disciplines Acceleration and Skid Pad took place. To set a time we drove an Acceleration run at 9 o’clock and then headed to Skid Pad where we set very good times with both drivers and thus ensured the fourth place as best combustion car. Due to the tight schedule we just barely missed the possibility to make use of the second Acceleration driver. Thus our first run was rated that still sufficed for a good 12th place against the electric cars.

In the afternoon we went on with Autocross. In good weather both Rennteam drivers set very good times. Ultimately we achieved a very good second place and we were only topped by the slightly faster car of TU Delft. But as usually the really big points were awarded on Sunday. Thanks to the good time in Autocross we were allowed to start in the top 5. On Sunday the weather conditions were untypically good for England. In Endurance a real neck-and-neck race took place between Rennteam, TU Delft and the Running Snails from Amberg-Weiden. All three teams could drive through without difficulties and were on about the same level in terms of speed. Rennteam asserted itself, even if only narrowly, and secured the fastest lap and the first place! In Fuel Efficiency we achieved a solid 17th place against the electric cars.
After Endurance came a shock announcement from Rescrutineering: In some vehicles irregularities were detected, which is why they were disqualified from Endurance. That also affected our main competitors that would have been on the podium with us or even ahead of us according to our forecasts. We want to show the teams our greatest respect for the achievements on the track and in the rest of the competition! Finally Rennteam won the cup for the best Overall Dynamics and also the 1st place in the overall placings.

Therefore Rennteam goes into the rest of the season with three victories in a row (FS Spain 2015, FSAE Michigan 2016 and FS United Kingdom 2016) and will make every effort to repeat these results!

The team managed to do about 100 testing kilometres and was very happy to be given te opportunity to interact with other Formula Student teams!

We want to thank ZF for this beautiful event and look forward to see you again in 2017!

FSAE Michigan 2016 https://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fsae-michigan-2016/?lang=en https://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/fsae-michigan-2016/?lang=en#respond Mon, 16 May 2016 12:30:29 +0000 http://www.rennteam-stuttgart.de/?p=2826&lang=en In the last month the F0711-10 and its team travelled to the United States of America where the FSAE Michigan 2016 took place from May 11th to May 14th at the Michigan International Speedway. With more than 120 participating combustion teams FSAE Michigan is the greatest event for combustion cars. After some testing days with our friends from the Ohio State University, the F0711-10 had to show the world one last time what it is capable of. In the meantime, the car has made much more than 2000 testing kilometers, which lead to at least some more worries about the reliability of the car during the event, also regarding the unpredictable weather of Michigan. But first the team had to do the statics: In engineering design Rennteam reached the finals with nine other teams. Design finals in Michigan are unique and exhausting at the same time because the team’s knowledge about the car is tested for almost two hours with all judges asking all kinds of questions. The good thing: For the first time in this season Rennteam was able to win a design event. Our business presentation again got on the podium this time, important points for us! Cost report in the US is calculated in a different way compared to the competitions in Europe which made it even more challenging for our cost-girls. With a nearly perfect 7th place it was the best result ever for Rennteam at the FSAE Michigan event.

Dynamics started with some minor complications as we had some shifting issues at the Acceleration event. Nevertheless Rennteam finished at 14th place. In return, skid pad went really well as Rennteam set a new personal record with a combined time of 4,714s! In the next discipline, the Autocross, we abandoned the field with only TU Graz in front of us. But as usual, the big points can be made at the last day of the competition, when the endurance and fuel efficiency take place giving a maximum amount of 400 points. Finishing the endurance with a reliable car is even more important than winning those events. After a very exciting and also exhausting endurance full of racing between TU Graz, Joanneum Graz, Global Formula Racing and us, we placed second once again just behind TU Graz. In fuel efficiency we placed 6th which is a quite strong result for a four cylinder engine.

With 921.7 points Rennteam won the overall competition. Maybe it was the most important event of the season as the FSAE Michigan is considered the unofficial world championship. The team can be very proud also regarding the high level of racing in the United States! With a 1st place at the design event Rennteam won every discipline at least one time this season. We are now in second place of the world raking list which is a very important step for the F0711-11. With similar results the crown could come back to Stuttgart in summer!
